Compatibility notes to ArchiCAD on Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

Kind of important News

If you’re using any version of ArchiCAD and getting excited about Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (or have already installed it). Read This. Now:

If you are already on Mac OS X 10.7, this is old news; but for those of you jumping from 10.6 or earlier, or an older version of Windows, no more using any version of ArchiCAD older than version 10. Once you switch to one of the Lions (Mountain or regular), you can no longer open programs that require the discontinued Rosetta Environment. If you don’t have ArchiCAD 10, remember to install the file converters so you are prepared.

I wouldn’t wait too much longer to migrate those old files. My recommendation is to open the old files in ArchiCAD 10 and save them as a .pla unless you have a rock solid library tracking system and can just save them as a .pln. Because who knows when Apple will change it’s internal OS architecture to prevent the usage of ArchiCAD 10. Sadly I’m sure that’s a not a matter of if, but when. And as most of us Mac users now know, Apple has joined the ranks of yearly updaters. Expect OS 10.9 in 2013 and whatever OS in 2014… 10.10? Or maybe that will be the year of OS X 11?

What about me?

I’m waiting to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.8. I need to backup everything to my external hard drive which is sitting safely 1,400 miles away in St. Paul. I also need to finally heed my brother’s wisdom and sign up for Carbonite.com. My brother’s advice is in the comments of this post. He is a god among IT guys. Listen to him. So I’ll be watching for Graphisoft to release an announcement saying the major issues are resolved. And then I’ll talk with my favorite Minnesota-based IT guy, Ryan, who knows both Macs and ArchiCAD before I actually do the upgrade. If you need his help (locally or remotely), I’ll connect you. He’s awesome too.

My vote for the name of OS X 10.9 is either Sea Lion or Liger.
