Bowling is the secret to BIM Mastery

Who’s the better bowler?

A guy who can throw perfect strike after perfect strike OR the guy who never misses picking up a spare.

It’s the guy who can pick up the spares. Of course 12 strikes gives you the best possible score, but perfection is the wrong goal. If you can only throw strikes, you’re a one trick pony. Picking up spares is much harder. Here’s another way to think of it… which is a bigger accomplishment? Getting 12 strikes or picking up every 7-10 split you see. It’s the second. I think this is the secret to mastering BIM, ArchiCAD, or whatever software you use. It’s not about perfect modeling, flawless data exporting, or never seeing an error message. It’s about being able to problem solve your way out of any hole. It’s about being handed some garbage and turning it into something magical. If unknowns and discomfort derail you, then you’ve got a long way to go.

Hmm… sounds a lot like design.

It’s also more fun! I love the challenge of trying to solve a wide range of issues rather than the same old office problems day in day out. Meeting with a wide variety of ARCHICAD users really makes you think outside the box. When I was first starting out I used to visit ARCHICAD-Talk every day and try to answer as many questions as I could. It was a super powerful way to learn the program and prepared me for a life of consulting. Now I get that so much in my daily routine that I spend less time online.

Life as a BIM Manager was certainly challenging in that there was no skirting around any challenges and you were part of the team that had to use what you created. You are definitely more accountable. But it’s when you need to make things work for someone else’s business needs, whether you agree with them or not, that is a real challenge. Plus you come across so many things you’d never usually be exposed to. Every day! And when it comes to group training, if you aren’t able to give a quick solution with confidence you quickly lose credibility. It’s not for the faint hearted!

So I agree entirely with your analogy! Any experienced ARCHICAD trainer will certainly relate!

    Cheers,

I agree with link, but nothing beats getting the turkey on that last frame. Some weeks I’m picking up others 7-10 splits day in and day out, some weeks we have a model/presentation/template development to concur, and it just feels good to sail through it and have flawless results!
