Archicad Tutorial #94: Area Calculations for Wall Area by Zone
In the YouTube comments of my previous video on Area Calculations for Siding and Flooring, I was asked about calculating wall area by room. The way to do this in Archicad is by using Zones rather than Walls. Well technically it’s both, since the Zones are reading Window and Door information from the Walls. Since this is such a great follow up question to my previous video, I decided to record a video walking through the process. Here it is:
I definitely gloss over a few things in the video, so please ask questions in the comments. If your building isn’t a perfect box with flat ceilings, if not all your walls have the same finish, if there are other irregularities, etc. you’ll need to refine your schedule’s criteria. Or maybe make multiple schedules. Or use a different method to calculate what you need; you might need to divide rooms by a different criteria than interior/exterior. Maybe you need to set up an Archicad property that’s “finish material” or something else (1/2″ gyp. bd. and 5/8″ gyp. bd). All that’s straightforward to do, once you know your schedule is getting the basic information: Zone Wall Surface.
What should we calculate next? Please let me know in the comments. For more on schedules, check out my video on schedules in Archicad 24. It’s still relevant and a nice compliment to these latest two videos above.
