Custom Objects in the Shoegnome Open Template

It’s been a busy year. My three year-long architect as developer project is finally complete and on the market. Now I get to enjoy the stress of selling four townhouses. I’ve got one daughter starting high school and another starting college (which is insane, considering this post). I’ve got a number of projects under construction or deep in design. The list goes on and on… Which means I’m way behind on sharing Archicad tutorial videos. So this week I recorded an atypical video. It’s sort of a tutorial, but it’s mostly discussing the custom Objects in the Shoegnome Open Template (V28.2). Custom Objects, whether simple 2D, saved as geometry, or scripted with GDL, make for better looking Archicad models and improved drawings. Most of the Objects I discuss in the video have been in the template for years—and there are Favorites for all of them—, but that doesn’t mean everyone using the template knows they are there. In addition to looking at each custom Archicad Object, I also talk a little bit about GDL. I’m far from an expert, but I know a few things. If you want to learn more about GDL, check out www.onland.info and download the GDL Cookbook Version 4. I can’t believe that second link still works in 2025. If it ever breaks, please let me know.

DOWNLOAD THE TEMPLATE!

Ready to download the template? Click the big support button or go to the template page. As always the template is free; clicking the PayPal support button (below or on the template page) is optional. Every time PayPal sends me an email notification that someone clicked the support button—whether it’s for $2 or $200—it brightens my day. If you support my template with a contribution of $100 or more and send me an email with your address, I’ll ship you an 8 oz tumbler as a thank you. The PayPal button below will take you to the Shoegnome Open Template v28.

If you aren’t using the current version of Archicad, you can download older versions of my template. If you use my template, I highly recommend you use my Work Environment as well. The two work together well and the Work Environment is designed to reinforce the best practices of the template. You can download my Work Environment here.
