Improved IFC / ArchiCAD Connection Add-In for Revit 2014 Applications
Jared’s note: read the beginning of this very closely. The Add-on is for Revit MEP, Structures, and Architecture (aren’t they all sort of one program now?). In previous versions of this add-on it was just for MEP and Structures. The day of easily going between Revit Architecture and ArchiCAD natively via save as .RVT or .PLN isn’t here yet (maybe it will never get here because of non-technical reasons), but some version of that future creeps closer and closer. Improved connection between Revit Architecture and ArchiCAD via IFC is a MAJOR step in the direction of “you use the software you prefer, I’ll use what I am best at, and we’ll work together to create some amazing architecture”.
BUDAPEST, August 5, 2013 — GRAPHISOFT, the global leader in Building Information Modeling (BIM) solutions for architects, has introduced its new plug-in developed for Revit 2014, offering improved IFC import and export functions of all Revit applications, including Revit Structure, Revit MEP and Revit Architecture.
The GRAPHISOFT ArchiCAD Connection is a free Add-In for Autodesk Revit software and improves the IFC model-based and bi-directional data exchange between GRAPHISOFT ArchiCAD and Autodesk Revit applications.
The GRAPHISOFT ArchiCAD Connection Add-In has two functions:
- “Improved IFC Import” imports IFC models to Revit using extra features that improve the interpretation of architectural models, and
- “Export to ArchiCAD” exports Revit model elements in IFC files that are specially enhanced for use in GRAPHISOFT ArchiCAD.
For detailed information, please see the manual.

Improved connection between Revit Architecture and ArchiCAD via IFC is a MAJOR step in the direction of “you use the software you prefer, I’ll use what I am best at, and we’ll work together to create some amazing architecture”.
I’ll give that an “Amen!”.

Great news! That’s the way to achieve a real BIM interoperability. OPEN MIND allows OPEN BIM.

Ironic that it is in fact Graphisoft that takes this step, independently of Autodesk…
Will have to test to see what has been improved. The previous version only improved certain structural and MEP object transfers, with no improvements on the architectural objects, which were the focus of what we needed to exchange.

This has an oh to familiar ring to it, you turn back the wheel to the Mid 90’s and era where 2D was the dominant CAD alternative & Autodesk was not playing ball with the process of finding a common process of data transfer between the major players. So it was upto Bentley & the like to create translators that would work with DXF only to find it finally evolve into DWG as the native translator. My only wish during that time was that Autodesk could have been more than just a bit player & taken a more proactive role in the process.
So then here we are today & I wonder will I see the process repeated again within the current BIM/3D CAD enviroment I hope not & I vehmently wish that Autodesk/Revit realiase that they should learn from lessons past & be part of the process for the beterment of the Industry as a whole.

looking for a way to work back and forth between ArchiCad 14 and Vectorworks 2013

Find a common file type they can both import/export and run some tests to make sure your data is exchanging properly. IF you need 3D data, you’ll probably need to use a 3D DWG or IFC. If it’s just 2D then a DWG is probably your easiest route. But a Vectorworks expert might have a better solution.

Mahalo (thanks! in Hawaii)
the IFC2x3 work pretty well. We’ll figure how to load textures onto both machines but that should just be a filing thing.
I’d like to find an IFC4 plugin for my Archicad 14……….. My architect partner has the latest VW so I think that supports IFC4.
Cheers

Is this common among software companies or am I just misunderstanding? It seems strange to me that Graphisoft developed a plug-in to improve an Autodesk product. It is a win win, since it encourages their softwares us; but it seems like Revit should have been been doing everything they could to develop this for themselves.

Different corporate mindsets. Also in this situation you can just see Graphisoft like any other API developer for Autodesk products. Seeing a need and fixing the problem.
